●猫とロボット

　認知科学が発展してくるとともに、機械の思考と人間の思考の違いが明確になってき
た。人間の思考のもつ不思議さが、機械との対比であらわになってきたのは、皮肉なこ
とである。以前は人間の思考は、言語化することで、機械に移植することは困難ではな
いと考えられていたのである。機械翻訳のプログラムが現実的なものと考えられていた
のも、そのような文脈においてである。

　もしも人間の思考が有限なプログラム言語で表現できるのであれば、人間の思考を機
械に代替させることは、原理的に可能なはずであり、忘却することがなく、演算速度の
はやいコンピュータであれば、人間の翻訳よりも優れた翻訳が短時間でできあがるはず
だった。

　しかし現実には、機械翻訳の道は多難であり、文法解析による翻訳の可能性は遠のい
ている。現在は文の構造を解析することによってではなく、すべての可能なヴァリエー
ションをあらかじめ入力しておいて、その入力された文との近さで翻訳を行う方が精度
が高いと考えられているようである。演繹の道という原理的な方法ではなく、帰納的な
道という経験的な方法の方が確実であるという事実は、コンピュータの意外な側面をあ
らわにする。

　この問題を象徴的に示すのが、フレーム問題である。フレーム問題とは、コンピュー
タには現実の世界を認識するフレームが欠如しているために、一つの命令を与えても、
それが現実の世界に及ぼす影響を認識できない、あるいはそれをすべて計算しようとす
ると、非常に長い演算時間が必要となり、実際の行動に移すことができないという欠陥
を示すものである。

　最近はソニーの開発するペット・コンピュータ（AIBO)というのが大人気らしい。イン
ターネットの個人的な流通相場では、高いプレミアムでやり取りされているという。も
っともこの人気は日本だけのようで、アメリカではそれほど爆発的にうれなかったらし
い。この日本における機械ペットの流行はさまざまなことを考えさせるが、ここでは逆
のことを考えてみよう。

　ある「お手伝いコンピュータ」のようなものが登場したとして、それにペットの猫の
世話をさせるとしよう。するとコンピュータは猫という生き物のすべての習性を知って
いるだけではなく、人間と猫との関係において発生しうるすべての問題を認識している
必要がある。しかしプログラミングされたことしか実行することのできないコンピュー
タは、猫の泣き声が人間に及ぼす影響とか、おしっこをしている猫を持ち上げた時に発
生する事態などについて直観的に理解することができない。

　三歳の子供でもなんなく理解できるようなことでも、コンピュータが認識しようとす
ると、たとえば猫の尿の科学的な成分の分析と、カーペットの相互作用についてなど、
無数の計算を行う必要が生じるために、行動に移すことができなくなってしまうのであ
る。

　これはコンピュータに身体が欠如していることによって発生する問題であると考える
ことができる。人間は誕生して以来、母親とのエロス的な関係から出発して、他者と自
然の関係を構築することを学んできた。

　しかし身体をもたず、他者とエロス的な関係を結ぶことのできない現在の形のコンピ
ュータには、このような世界のフレームが欠如している。人間が母親との間で、そして
その後に父親やその他の他者との間で結ぶ関係は、まだプログラミングすることのでき
ない多様な情報が含まれているということが明らかになったのである。


　ところでフッサールは、人間の認識におけるフレームの意味を、別の観点から考察し
た。フッサールは人間の知覚認識には、重要な制約とともに大きな可能性が潜んでいる
と考えていた。まず人間の知覚認識は、ものを一つの視点からしか眺めることができず、
事物の全体を把握することはできない。わたしが机を眺める時には、一つの角度から眺
めるのであり、その裏側はつねにわたしには隠されている。そして裏側に回ったとする
と、今度は表側が「裏側」となるのである。

　これは人間の認識のパースペクティブ性を示すものであり、志向性という概念には、
このようなパースペクティブ性の制約が固有のものとしてそなわっている。人間の認識
がこのような不完全なものとして行われないのは、人間が身体をもち、眼という器官で
ものを眺めるからであり、神のような鳥瞰的な視点からものを眺めることができないか
らである。

　フッサールの地平という概念は、この視点のパースペクティブ性を一つの特徴として
いる。志向的な意識においては、視点の向かう対象を越えたものがつねに含まれていて、
意識は対象を越えて進もうとする性質をそなえている。わたしが見ている机は、机その
ものとしてではなく、部屋の壁や天井やその他の事物の中におかれた一つの事物として
認識されているのであり、抽象的に空間において認識されるのではない。

　意識が対象に向かうとともに、対象の背景にある事物も潜在的に知覚される。そして
これらの背景にある事物に注意を向けると、その事物がこの背景から浮かび上がってき
て、意識の対象となり、それまで知覚されていた対象が背景に沈み込み、地平の一部と
なるわけである。

　この地平概念で重要なのは、これが人間の認識の構造であること、そしてこれがコン
ピュータにはないフレームのようなものを構成していると考えられることである。だか
ら知覚の対象といない事物も、たんに知覚される可能性のある事物として地平に存在し
ているのではなく、その潜在的な意味においてまで認識されていると考えることができ
る。

　机がある部屋、部屋がある住居、住居が面している街路、街路の集まりとしての都市、
都市のネットワークとしての社会と国家、国家の集合体としての地球、地球が属する太
陽系、銀河が属する宇宙にまで、潜在的な地平は広がりをもつのであり、人間の認識は
潜在的にはこの無限に拡大する地平の意味を含みこむものとして成立していると考える
ことができる。

　言い換えると、ある事物が知覚される時には、その机の存在する空間が、潜在的に地
平として、一つの意味をもった場として成立していなければ、机自体の認識も、認識し
た机に対してなんらかの行動を取ることも、不可能になるということである。コンピュ
ータに欠けていたフレームとは、知覚におけるこのような地平的な構造であると考える
ことができる。

　そして人間の認識がこのような地平的な構造をそなえることができるのは、人間が身
体をもつ存在であり（フッサールはこの身体構造をキネステーゼという概念で考察する）、
他者とエロス的な関係を結ぶ存在だからだと考えることができる。宇宙の構造を考察す
る科学的な認識も、このような身体をもつ存在にそなわるフレーム的な構造によって、
はじめて可能となるのである。

　後期のフッサールは人間の認識におけるこのような身体性と地平性が、科学的に認識
に先だって存在していなければならないことを、生活世界という概念で表現するように
なる。これは、人間の身体のもつフレーム的な地平であり、メルロ＝ポンティが『知覚
の現象学』のうちで描き出そうとしたものは、この身体のフレーム的な構造だった。

　AIの分野ではフレーム問題はもはやそれほど重視されていない。多重的なフィードバ
ックを複合させていくことでいつか解決できるはずだと考えられているからだろう。フ
レーム問題はたしかにAIの発展のうちの歴史的なひとこまとなったかもしれない。しか
しこのフレーム問題が示したテーマは、まだ大きな可能性をひめている。

　さらにコンピュータが疑似的な身体をもち、フィードバック的な情報回路をそなえた
らこれは機械といえるのかどうか、その「機械」は人間とは異なるかというのは、フレ
ーム問題よりももっと大きな問題を引き起こすはずである。これからしばらくこれらの
テーマについて考えてみたい。

フーコーの著書が一冊もないのは、なんとも残念です。
フーコーの本はたしかにどれも長いので、点訳者の方もきっとしり込みしたくなるので
しょうね。
でも、うーん、残念。
