●光と闇の考古学（二）

このように一六六〇年代の後半に、ヨーロッパを通じて街路が照明されるようになる
のとほとんど時を同じくして、汎ヨーロッパ的に発生した出来事がある。いわゆる「大
いなる閉じ込め」である。フーコーが『狂気の歴史』でまざまざと描いたように、一七
世紀半ばにヨーロッパの全体で、それまで街路を自由に横行していた狂者たち、乞食、
リベルタン、放蕩者、異端者などがいっせいに収容施設にとじこめられた。
一六五六年、パリに一般施薬院が建設されたことがそれを象徴する。この施設が突然の
ように姿を消した癩患者のための施設の内部に設置されたことは有名だが、パリの市民
の百分の一にあたる六千の市民が、ある日、ここに監禁されたのである。これは国王の
命令によるものであったが、市民の感受性になにか変化が生じていない限り、このよう
なことは考えにくいだろう。
フーコーはこう述べている。「ごく隠密に、おそらく長い時間をかけて、ヨーロッパ文化
に共通の社会的な感性が形成されたに違いない。そしてこの感性が一七世紀の後半に、
突如として表面に浮かび上がってきた」(*1)。この社会の感性が、この監禁施設に収容
すべきひとびとのカテゴリーを指定し、このカテゴリーにあてはまるひとびとを実際に
監禁したわけだ。
これが、照明の場合と同じように、権力の外的な強制だけではなく、市民の側からのイ
ニシアティブがあったことは、この種の施設が市民側の主導ですでに建設されていたこ
とからも明らかだろう。一六七六年にフランスのすべての都市に一般施薬院を建設する
ようにという命令がだされたが、王が命令する前から、リヨンにはすでに一六一二年か
ら、トゥールには、一六五六年からこの種の施設が存在していたのである。
そしてバーゼルには一六六七年に、ブレスラウには一六六八年に、フランクフルトには
一六六四年に、ケーニヒスベルクには一六九一年に、この種の監禁施設が創設されてい
る。イギリスではもっと早い時期から登場していたが、この時期にこうした施設が監禁
だけをするのではなく、貧民の労役場として経済的に運営されるようになっていたこと
が注目される。一六七〇年にはチャールズに世の命令で労役場の地位が定められた、一
六九七年にはブリストルで最初の労役場が設置され、法人組織として運営された。
これらの施設は「施薬院」という名前にはかかわらず、狂者だけを収容するものではな
く、労働の規律に反するすべてのひとびとが閉じ込められていたことはよく知られてい
る。一八世紀末にヨーロッパの各地の監獄を回って巡察したハワードは、「監獄によって
は精神薄弱者や精神病患者をも収監している」ことを嘆いているほどだ(*2)。
デカルトが学問を都市の建築にたとえた『方法序説』を出版したのは一六三七年のこと
だが、この時期から後の光の時代、啓蒙の時代を生み出すような社会的な感性が構築さ
れていたと考えることができるだろう。この感性は一八世紀には、ポリスという学問と
なって結実する。
このポリスの学は、社会のすべての側面を取り上げながら、ひとびとの生活水準を向上
させるとともに、ひとびとを監視する学であった。街路をあかあかと照らしだす社会の
感性が、同時に街路にいることが望ましくないひとびとを、闇の中に監禁したのである。
そしてこの社会的な感性は、ぼくたちの時代にもまだ失われたわけではないだろう。
さて、最初のパリとロンドンの拮抗関係に関連して、ついでに考えておきたいのは、こ
の社会的な感性が、イギリスとフランスで互いに呼応しあうような形で象徴的に示され
たことだ。すでに指摘したように、街路の照明は国王の威信を示すものであると同時に、
市民のよりよき生活のために街路を照らしだしていた。フランス革命の際に、最初に襲
撃の対象となったのは、「王の眼」のランタンだったらしい。
革命群衆は、ランタンを破壊し、「反革命の徒」をランタンに吊した。狭い街路の中の叛
徒たちは闇の中で自由を満喫し、バリケードを構築し、敷石をはがして軍隊に対抗した。
国王の軍隊は、この叛徒たちに手も足もでなかったという。この大衆叛乱の怖さが身に
しみた権力は、ナポレオン三世のもとでパリ大改造を行う。
オスマンは叛乱の拠点だった旧市街を取り壊し、軍を輸送できる大きな街路を放射状に
配置した。そしてランタンに代わって、街路にはガス燈が配置される。サールマンが指
摘するように、パリ改造が群衆叛乱に対処することを重要な目的としていたことは明ら
かだろう(*3)。
オスマンの改革の直後のパリ・コミューンでは、叛乱群衆は広い街路を使って迅速に展
開される軍に追いまくられ、ガス燈にあかあかと照らされながら狙い撃ちされた。そし
て「太陽の塔」はまだパリ・コミューンの思い出が生々しいころに設計されたのである。
パリの市街を昼のようにあかあかと照らしだし、すべてのものを見通す大きな眼が地上
につり下げられると想像してもいいだろう。まさにパノプティコンの夢である。
これに対して、イギリスではフランス革命に対処するためには、都市改造ではなく、ひ
とびとの心の改造が進められた。ここでは「権力の眼」は地上にではなく、ひとびとの
心の中に作り出された。一九世紀のはじめに盛んになった「福音主義」は、ひとびとに
生き方を変えることを求めた。「神は眼を見開き、耳をそばだてている。このすべてを見
る眼とすべてを聞く耳を、心の中の良心にする」(*4)ことを求めたのである。
その意味では、ベンサムのパノプティコンが構想されたのがイギリスであり、しかもイ
ギリス本土では彼の構想が採用されず、この時代のヨーロッパ大陸で好まれたことは象
徴的である。心の中に神の目を開くことが求められているときに、ハードな監獄は好ま
れず、当時のパリでぎゃくに、ベンサム的な夢想が暖められたのだろう。
ただしパリを真上から照らし出す「太陽の塔」の構想と、ベンサムのパノプティコンの
構想とはちょうど裏返しになっていることに注目しよう。物理的な照明は、外から人々
のふるまいを照らし出す。これに対してベンサムの監獄の中央の塔には、物理的な監視
の目は不要である。監獄に収容された人々が、そこに「目」が存在すると考えるだけで、
人々が「ただしく」ふるまうようにするには十分なのである。
太陽の塔に代表される照明は、かつての王のランタンのように、人々を監視する。しか
しこの照明は人々が自らの生活のために作り出したものでもある。この夜間も照明され
る町は、やがてボードレールがふらつくフラヌールの町、ベンヤミンが描き出したパサ
ージュの世界を作り出す。「パサージュはガス照明が最初に誕生したところである」(*5)。
同時に、外の公共の光の世界を逃れて、「個」の私秘的な世界が形成される。「わたし」
だけの照明が登場するのである。プルースト『失われた時を求めて』では、読書をする
パーソナルなあかりが冒頭に登場する。このろうそくはプルーストの創作を象徴するあ
かりでもあるが、照明が公共的なものとなるとともに、自分だけのあかりが特別な意味
を持ち始めるのである。
プルーストの頃のブルジョワ住宅は、外部の光を遮断する厚いカーテンを窓にかける。
この頃のフランスの家屋の暗さは、意図的に作られたものである。そしてその内部を、
外部とは異なる自分たちだけの光であかあかと照らしだす。この光は、たとえばフェル
メールの光とどれほど違うことだろう。フェルメールの絵では、外部のあかるい光が家
のなかに幸せそうにさしこんでいる。
これに対してプルーストのランプの人工の光は、個人の内面の世界を内側から照らし出
すかのようである。「大いなる閉じ込め」は、うろんな人々を監獄の中に監禁する。しか
し監獄はたんなる監禁の場ではなく、社会の全体を組織するパノプティコンの空間のモ
デルとなる。学校、病院、兵舎において、監獄のモデルが再現され、そこから近代社会
にふさわしい主体となる人々が誕生してくる。心のうちに神の目、みずから正しく行動
する倫理を抱えた主体である。
太陽の塔の光と、それを避けるような室内の闇、そして自分だけの小さなあかりと内面
的な世界。監獄の闇とそれを内側から照らしだす神のまなざし。光のうちの闇、そして
闇のうちの光。近代的な主体は、光と闇の対立、公共の明るい世界と私秘的な闇の対立
の弁証法的なドラマツルギーのうちに誕生してくるかのようである。

フランスにおけるニーチェの魔力
前回紹介したスローターダイクのエルマオ講演の省略部分では、人間の「調教」につい
て二つのテクストを使っていた。プラトンの『国家』とニーチェである。プラトンは『国
家』において、人々にあう国家を作り出すことを考えるのではなく、理想の国家にあわ
せて人々を「改造」することを夢見ていた。
同じくニーチェにとっても、人間は動物の一種、真理やら知やら権力とかいういかがわ
しいものを好み、こうしたものなしには生きていけない奇妙な動物の一種とみえていた。
ニーチェの生物学主義と道徳論の奇妙な組み合わせは、ニーチェのドイツ人嫌悪とは別
に、ナチズムにつながる道がまったくないわけではなく、迂闊にニーチェに依拠したス
ローターダイクをハーバーマスが攻撃したのも、理解できないことはない。
ところでニーチェは現代のドイツでは、ハイデガーの思想的な源泉のようないかがわし
いイメージでみられることが多いようだが、フランスではニーチェの人気は相変わらず
高いようだ。ことしはニーチェの百周忌の年でもあり、さまざまな書物が出版されてい
る。
ちなみにニーチェは一九〇〇年八月二五日にワイマールで亡くなった。死の床について
落日を眺めるニーチェのデッサンは有名だが、ワイマールのあの美しい森を眺めながら
亡くなったのだろうか。ニーチェの死は八月だが、ぼくはニーチェのまなざしが冬枯れ
の木立の向こうに沈む夕日を眺めているように思えてならない。
さて、ニーチェのフランス受容は大きくわけて三つの波で捉えられる。ニーチェが亡く
なった時点で、すでにフランスではニーチェはロマン主義とコスモポリタンの象徴のよ
うな存在として、アーティスト仲間では評判が高かったという。ニーチェの生前から、
フランスではすでにニーチェ受容が始まっていたわけだ。一八七七年の早い時点で、ニ
ーチェのワーグナー論がフランスで翻訳出版されているという。
第一次世界大戦の後の一九三〇年代に、フランスでの第二波のニーチェ受容が始まる。
ジイド、ヴァレリー、そして『聖社会学』のグループのバタイユやカイヨワがニーチェ
を盛んに読んでいた。バタイユは自分のことをニーチェの生まれ変わり（笑）と思って
いたほどで、ニーチェの思想をまるで同時代の思想のように読み込んでいた。バタイユ
の思想には、ニーチェとフロイトの思想のアマルガムのような側面があるのはたしかだ
ろう。
そして第二次世界対戦後のフランスで、クロソウスキーがニーチェ受容の第三波の口火
を切る。一九五四年には『悦ばしき知』と一八八〇−一八八二年の『断片』の翻訳を出
版し、力への意思と永遠回帰の思想を軸にしたニーチェ論を発表し始める。クロソウス
キーはその後一九七一年にはハイデガーの『ニーチェ』を邦訳、一九七六年には一八八
七−一八八八年のニーチェのもっとも重要な時期の『断片』を翻訳する。ドゥルーズ、
フーコー、デリダのニーチェ論は、このクロソウスキーの翻訳と批評を土台としている
といえるだろう。
そして最近のハイデガー批判では、このニーチェ受容の伝統が基礎となっている。デリ
ダ批判にハイデガー批判が接続し、ハイデガー批判にニーチェ批判が接続するという流
れだ。ルノー／フェリーの『一九六八年の思想』では、フーコーがフランス・ニーチェ
派として批判されていたが、これもこの伝統に依拠するものといえるだろう。連想ゲー
ムみたいだが（笑）。
そして今回がいわば第四波になるのかどうかは明らかではないが、ニーチェの関連書と
してまずJaccques Le Ridierが『フランスにおけるニーチェ』という書物を出した。こ
れはフランスでのニーチェ受容の歴史を考察したもので、読むときっとおもしろいだろ
うな。またMari-Jose Pernin Segissementが『ニーチェとショーペンハウアー』を出版
した。これはニーチェの選民と超人の思想におけるキリスト教と無神論の影響を考察し
たものらしい。
またDidier Raymondの監修で、『ニーチェと偉大なる健康』という書物が出版された。
またJacques Rogeは『ニーチェの兆候』という書物で、ニーチェは売春宿でうつされた
梅毒ではなく、たんなる躁鬱病にすぎないという診断を下しているそうだ。ニーチェと
狂気の問題は、フーコー、ブランショ、バタイユにとっての重要なテーマであり、思想
的な問題として残されていることを考えると、後世の医者が文献からあれこれいっても、
どれほどの意味があるかは疑問だが。
最後にBernard Edelmanが『ニーチェ、失われた大陸』という書物を出版した。『カント
の家』の著書もあるエデルマンだが（この本はケッサクで、笑いころげながら読める）、
この書物では「初めて読む視線」でニーチェの著作と断片を読もうとしている。エデル
マンは、ニーチェの「調教」の思想が、生物学的にも重要な意味をもっていると考えて
いる。「わたしの知る限り、ニーチェはバイオ倫理について厳密な意味で考えさせてくれ
る唯一の偉大な哲学者です」というのがエデルマンの評価だ。
ぼくはニーチェの『悦ばしき知』の視点を受け継いだフーコーの生の権力の概念が、ニ
ーチェそのものよりももっと重要な広がりを示していると考えるが、ニーチェがその基
礎となっていることについては異議はない。スローターダイクはナイーブではあったが、
目のつけどころは間違ってはいないのである。
